I would say that one of the most important parts is the use of as semantic
markup as possible. Keep your markup accessible, remember a search engine
bot has neither eyes nor hands.

Adrienne, what is sematic markup? Can you explain exactly what that is
and maybe give an example or two of it in practice (coding)? Thanks!

Semantic markup is using the right element for the job. For example, H1 is
a first level heading, and it should be used for that - just once, not just
because its default style is a large bold font. Presentation should be
separated from markup.

I have tutorial:

It was meant for modern browsers, like Opera, Firefox, Chrome, Safari,
etc. Heck, it renders fine in IE9.

I would suggest upgrading your browser, not just to look at this page,
but there were a lot of security fixes incorporated in IE8 that were not
in IE7. You are going to find a lot of other pages other than this one
that don't "work" correctly whilst using IE7.

In the meantime, I'll see about making some changes for the odd IE7
visitor. Thanks for the heads up, and Merry Christmas!

It isn't really a problem for me as I normally browse with firexfox.

However I looked at the page on my PC at work where we are stuck with the
corporate Windows XP / IE7 combination for the moment.

By the way other pages I looked at on your site rendered find in IE7.

Happy holidays to you too :)

If you are JUST starting out, there is no better place to start than
Google's own Search Engine Optimization Guide (2010 Edition)

http://www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf

Also helps to sign up for Google's and Bing's help forums and the
respective Web Master Tools (I think Bing's is names the same) accounts:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home
http://www.bing.com/toolbox/webmasters/

(help forums are linked from the respective WMT accounts)

IMHO the very first thing to learn about SEO is that there are only two
players left in this field - Google and Bing. That'll help flatten than
learning curve a little and you won't have to waste time reading about
other search engines.

Good luck!

I second this suggestion.

Also, read every single post by Matt Cutts and mattcutts.com.

Also, never do bad stuff for good websites.

Say, if you have a great site with real people, say
pancakerecipes.info or whatever, stay "way away from the line". Now if
you have some marginal websites, you can resort to greyer techniques.
