The old "I've seen big drops on Google" question

Hi Everyone

It's been a while since I've visited the forum. I just thought I'd
ask if anyone has seen big changes in Google over the last two weeks.
I know its a question you see in the forums all the time. But I
monitor about 20 sites on a weekly basis and changes have been minor
for the last 2 or 3 years, up and downs as expected, then last week we
saw a number of major jumps with some sites. First the spammier sites
went up and the older more established sites down slightly, then this
reversed a couple of days later. And yesterday/today (the report
takes a long time to run) I saw 6 sites in the same industry (mixture
of spammy and good) all drop places quite dramatically.

Anyone seen anything similar, any ideas what is going on? Possibly
rumblings continueing from the May update?

And by the way, I'm not concerned about the drops as I know that
they'll bounce back, just wondering why?

Frankly, I'm more surprised to learn that someone monitors 20 sites and
haven't seen a major shift anywhere between Nov 2009 (beginning of
Caffeine infrastructure update) through May 2010 (Mayday algo update) all
the way until just now. You must be doing something right, I gotta tell
you! But, yes, ever since Mayday the ramblings continue as they appear to
be tweaking the dreaded filters. I am seeing a lot of yo-yo-ing going on
(up for 3-5 days, down for 7-10) that started in May.

How did you manage to develop that? If I've learned anything doing this
for 10+ years it's that you cannot actually be sure of anything because of
the immense amount of factors that play into it.

But still, the best strategy after a big shift happens (for the first time
at least) is to sit tight and do nothing for 3-4 weeks all the while
digging into the recent past to see if there's been some site-wide change
made from 3-4 months ago until a couple of weeks ago that seemed
insignificant at the time but might have tripped a filter.

Good luck!

Thanks Dmitri, I'm glad to hear its not just me then.

The 20 sites are all for different clients who like monthly or weekly
reports on their rankings etc.

And my confidence is only due to the fact I never do anything remotely
grey or black hat, its all good quality copy and a steady stream of
good links. It's much slower but also more robust in the long-term.
The spammier sites I mention are ones which have had a dubious past,
nothing to do with me though.
