Discussion:
Searching a page for several words?
(too old to reply)

Viewing a page in my browser (Firefox), I can search for a single word and
get it highlighted. But there appears to be no way to search for several
at once, such as 'this' OR 'that' OR 'whatever'? (Apart from resorting to
copying source code to an external program.)

What syntax could I use in a Google search to do so please, on a page with
the URL say http://www.xyz.com ?

Did you just arrive from another planet?

No, you didn't understand the OP correctly (I guess). He wants to be
able to search /in a single page/ for several words from the browser.

The OP could do this via Google by using:

http://www.google.com/search?q=inurl%3Ahttp%3A//johnbokma.com/mexit/2011/03/07/%20baby%20centipede%20totalco

and clicking on the cached link. Note that this example shows 2 results
since the start of the URL I used is not unique.

I get the same effect at http://www.google.com/advanced_search

Enter "soups salads" either in the "all these words:" {AND} box, -or-
enter each in the individual "one or more of these words:" {OR} boxes,
then enter ferryboatinn.ai/restaurant.html in the
"Search within a site or domain:" box.

The Advanced Google search runs with "site:URL" versus your use of
"inurl:URL" -- and I cannot see any difference in the results.

I've known about the "inurl:" 'hack' for years. Used it Back In The Day
when there was no "Advanced" page at Google. 'Tis only now that I
noticed it was not "inurl:" that was being used in the Advanced Google
search, but rather "site:URL", instead. Curious....

Thanks John, appreciate your taking the trouble to read my question and
experiment.

However, I can't get that to work.

Take this text-heavy page as an example.
http://www.chess.com/echess/current_games.html

Suppose I want to see whether any of the following names appear in it:

VivekVelso
gamemaker1977
Jason_P7
jazu
aamarildo

In my Firefox Google search box, using your example as my model, I
entered:

inurl:http://www.chess.com/echess/current_games.html VivekVelso
gamemaker1977 Jason_P7 jazu aamarildo

But I get the error message:
"Your search - inurl:http://www.chess.com/echess/current_games.html
VivekVelso gamemaker1977 ... - did not match any documents."

Same using IE. And also if I use Advanced Search.

The 'Site:' prefix appears to be defined as "Search within a site or
domain:", not a Page, so perhaps that's part of the issue?

Meanwhile I've done it by saving the page as text and using my text
editor, but that was a bit of a chore.

Enter the url in the search field:
http://www.google.com/search?q=http%3A//www.chess.com/echess/current_games.html

Click on "Cached" link

Remove everything after the first + and then type your terms after this
+ separated by +:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:3V6vJPQyaPMJ:www.chess.com/echess/current_games.html+sodel+LeBonVer+peva

Clumsy, but it works.

But OTOH, I can't imagine that someone hasn't written a Firefox add on
for this.

And... tadaaaaa:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchwp/

Maybe?

Great, thanks John! Duly installed that add-on, SearchWP, which looks
exactly what I need.

For my education, can you amplify on why the former method works please,
i.e. "Remove everything after the first + " etc.

Oh, that was just to clean up things a bit. And the method was indeed
clumsy, you can just enter:

cache:http://example.com/ your key words

cache:http://johnbokma.com centipede mesa kids

redirects to:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache%3Ahttp%3A//johnbokma.com/%20centipede%20mesa%20kids
